THE UNCONSCIOUS SELF

The dance theatre performance The Unconscious Self has been inspired by the story of Narcissus in Greek mythology. Instead of a traditional plot, we follow the stages of the journey of a human mind, from behavioural patterns resulting from childhood traumas to a complete loss of emotional and moral control.

Living without empathy or remorse, the protagonist of the story can easily control the women around him as puppets, with an extroverted narcissist’s special talent for winning people’s sympathy.

However, if the narcissist is not careful enough, over time his charm will wear off and he can inflict merciless wounds on his victims. But how can those around him keep up with this? Will there come a low point when the ‘house of cards’ collapses, leaving in its place an insecure, doubtful, selfish, unconscious self?

Performed to the moving, authentic melodies of Greek folk songs, fluctuating polarities of moods and emotions create an imperfect harmony with the dancers’ bodies, inviting the audience on a tense and exciting journey.

“I love myself when I love you.”
